Tip 1: Measure, measure, measure.

If you have never had a bra fitting, you should consider getting one. You can wear a bra and a thin T-shirt to get the fitting done. It will only take a few minutes. It is fine if you prefer to have a friend measure you. Just make sure that the measuring tape is positioned flat against your body and right under your breasts, for the band size.

Tip 2: Try on several different styles of bras.

The best way to find the proper cup size is trial and error. The middle of the bra, between the cups, should touch your chest or come very close to your chest. If it doesn’t quite reach this area, you will need to try a larger cup size.

Tip 3: Pull the band and note the comfort level.

Your band should not feel tight; it should feel snug. You should also be able to raise your arms and bend without your bra shifting out of place. If the bra slips out of place when you twist or move, try a lower band size. If you can’t slip a finger in and pull the band at least a half of an inch, it might be too tight.

Tip 4: Don’t worry about the price.

A bra that fits well is valuable part of every woman’s wardrobe. There is no need to spend $100 on a single bra, but don’t be surprised if the $5 deal isn’t supportive or comfortable. Try several bras on and get the ones that are the most comfortable and fit well. The money will be well worth it.

Tip 5: Fit the bra to the loosest hook.

Due to the wash and wear of your bras, they may get looser over time. Your bra will last longer if you fit the bra to the loosest hook and use the tighter hooks down the road as the bra gets older.

Once you find the brand and style of bra that is the most comfortable, you can pick out the colors that you want. Grab a few, and try to remember which ones we almost perfect just in case that perfect one is discontinued. Follow these tips and you will never have to worry about an uncomfortable bra again.

  1. I have kyphosis which means I have a humpback with very round shoulders. I am also barrel chested so if the bra fits around, the straps are too far apart and slide off. I found a v strap bra once that was pretty good but it was discontinued. Usually, I try on everything in the store. I have had some altered by moving the straps in back, but they don’t fit the same. Any ideas would be appreciated. Jo

    1. Hi Jo,

It sounds like your bra fitting is indeed a challenge. My first course of action would be to contact the largest Nordstrom in your area. If you are in San Diego, that would be the Fashion Valley location. Call the manager and explain your situation and if they feel they can help, arrange an appointment with the manager for a fitting. They are very well trained and have a large inventory.

If Nordstrom cannot find the perfect bra for you, they might have a recommendation. The next step would be to contact a specialty bra store. In San Diego we have a store called The Enchantress and they specialize on unusual and exceptional bras.

FInding a bra that constructed with straps close together will be your quest. If you do have to have one altered to work well, don’t be disheartened, almost everyone needs alterations to fit some part of their body. The key is, not many realize this or take the time to make their clothes perfect. After a little trial and error and with trained bra fitters, you will be able to find the perfect bra or one that can be made to be perfect with a little TLC from your local seamstress! There is a perfect bra for everyone, it simply takes time and help from professionals.
