I’ve been invited to an event and the invitation says it is semi-formal. What does this mean? Do I wear a knee length or long dress? Thanks for your help.
Semi-formal invitations are the most tricky to decipher. Usually they imply that long dresses are not required, nor are tuxes. An evening wedding (after 6 PM) would still dictate a cocktail dress for her and a dark suit for him. Daytime semi-formal events mean a suit for him and an appropriate short dress or dressy suit for her.
If the invitation states Formal attire or Black Tie, you can wear a long dress, or a dressy evening gown. In trendier areas like LA, men could also wear a tux with a black shirt with no tie.
Black Tie Optional means you have the option of wearing a tuxedo or long gown. It can also tip you into the formality of the event, meaning a dark suit and tie would be your other option.
With the wide variety of clothing choices for women, it is often difficult to determine what to wear during the job interview process. I always advise clients to research the company they are interviewing with to determine (more…)
I do not wear any makeup and have long hair. Is there a minimum amount of makeup that is considered appropriate (i.e. lipstick, mascara, etc)?
I have also noticed professional women tend to have short hair. My hair is always clean and tidy, but I’m not sure (more…)

Everyone needs one perfect little black dress. It is one of my 18 Essential Wardrobe Elements. This client wanted to reinvent her style. Many of my clients request the same shift after they have been out of school and in the work force for a few years.
Amazingly, this job was not a challenge at all! I was searching specifically for 40’s inspired pieces and was lucky enough to find several with little effort. That will probably never so easily again, but sometimes the stars align perfectly with my desires!
This client looks and feels great in classic vintage inspired clothes. The lines are a perfect fit for her body and her personality. As you can see with this dress, it is ultra feminine and very flattering. It is so unique and form-fitting, it should be couture! We also found beautiful cardigans with interesting beadwork, lacy camisoles and peep-toe pumps to reinforce her new style throughout her entire wardrobe.
We even found this simple and stunning ivory satin dress below which later became her wedding gown!
Situation: A very successful businesswoman who was stuck in the 80’s with her old suit. Notice the narrow legs on the slacks and the large shoulder pads?
Solution: Choose more modern lines that will emphasize her great body! Flared jeans and point toe shoes add curves to her silhouette and elongate her body line.
A colleague, Leigh Ernst, is collecting gowns, shoes, jewelry and clutches for women to attend the 5th annual Marine Corp Ball in style.
Leigh is not involved in the military in any way, but at church it touched her heart about how grateful the girls were who received dresses to wear last year that could not afford to buy a dress or go to the ball….Kind of a Cinderella story.
They were literally in tears as they “shopped “among the donated items. Many girls were shocked that there were actually dresses in their size.
It is an easy thing to do to clear these items from your closet and ADD SPACE!! (a gift to yourself!)
If you can help out…please bring or mail your items to Leigh and she will make sure they get to the girls in time for the Ball scheduled for October 3rd. She said that dresses are arriving daily from all across the US. This is the perfect opportunity for you to dig into your closet and pass on your good to others but you need to do it this week!
Mail or drop off your evening gowns and accessories before September 27th to:
4659 Telescope Ave. Carlsbad, CA 92008

“Kathi was the speaker for an IWN event (Intuit Women’s Network) at our San Diego sight in conjunction with a We Care and Give Back shoe and purse drive. This drive was to benefit the women and the organization Dress for Success. Kathi was a natural choice to invite to speak because of her expertise in organization and image consulting as well as her passion for Dress for Success. We feel that her presentation was relevant and her approach was great. We loved the Q&A and her willingness to answer questions on the spot! Intuit would love to have Kathi back to share more of her knowledge…we look forward to women coming together and feeling empowered. Thanks Kathi!”
