One of the most challenging kinds of muck is the muck that you inherit from your family. Some items are truly valuable and have been in the family for generations, and someone needs to hold on to those things. If you find yourself holding on to most of the family treasures, try to share the burden with others in your family, ask them if they would like to have these items on display, or even better, actually use them.
It’s also important to say no to things that you just don’t have a place for. Valuable family heirlooms are one thing, but when your parents are passing on sentimental items that you just don’t want or don’t have room for, remember that it is not your responsibility to find a home for their stuff. Keep a few things that really mean something to you, and encourage mom and dad to donate the rest to someone who really needs it.
