Title graphic for 10 Genius Cleaning Hacks: organize supplies for a spotless home with ease

TL;DR

Keep a fully stocked cleaning caddy in each major area of your home, store tools where you use them, and use clear, labeled bins or hooks so nothing goes missing. Then clear surfaces before you start and clean in short timed bursts, and restock the caddy as soon as a supply runs out.

Tired of searching for cleaning tools when it’s time to scrub and struggling to stay on top of housework? You’re not alone! Between lost scrub brushes, missing spray bottles, and the endless hunt for the right cleaner, cleaning can feel more frustrating than fulfilling.

But what if you could ditch the chaos and whip your home into shape—fast?

With a few clever organizing tricks, you can transform cleaning from a dreaded chore into a quick, stress-free routine. Say goodbye to wasted time and hello to a home that’s always guest-ready!

How do you organize cleaning supplies so they are ready when you need them?

1. Why should every room have its own cleaning caddy?

This is my all-time favorite cleaning caddy made by Sterilite!

Store a fully stocked cleaning bucket in every major area—kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room. Each caddy should include:

  • Multi-surface cleaner
  • Microfiber cloths & sponges
  • Rubber gloves
  • Specialty cleaners (toilet bowl cleaner, shower spray, oven cleaner, etc.)

No more running around gathering supplies—just grab the bucket and start cleaning! When finished, tuck it under the sink or in a closet for next time.

2. Do clear storage bins really help?

Clear bins or open-top organizers make it easy to spot what you need. Label them for even faster retrieval.

3. What goes in a tote for quick touch-ups?

Fill a small tote with essentials like disinfecting wipes, a duster, and a mini vacuum for quick cleanups between deep cleans.

4. Where can you hang cleaning supplies when space is tight?

Maximize space by hanging spray bottles, brushes, and gloves on hooks or an over-the-door shoe organizer.

5. Should cleaning tools live where you use them?

Keep a toilet brush near each toilet, a mop in a utility closet, and a duster in the living room. This eliminates wasted steps!

How can you clean faster once your supplies are organized?

6. Why declutter before you clean?

Remove unnecessary items from countertops and surfaces first—fewer obstacles mean faster, more efficient cleaning. Here is a motivational factoid to keep in mind: according to the National Soap & Detergent Association, getting rid of clutter would eliminate 40% of the housework in the average home! For more ways to make every session shorter, see Organized House Cleaning.

7. Does a timer make cleaning go faster?

Challenge yourself to 10- or 15-minute bursts of focused cleaning to stay motivated.

8. Can one product do the work of several?

Another way to save time and money is to try using an all-in-one product. Many all-in-one products are now organic and non-toxic. There are many products that can be used as whiteners, stain removers and disinfectants.

9. How do you make your own natural cleaners?

If you like to use all natural cleaners, here are a few DIY recipes:

  • All purpose cleaner: 1 teaspoon dish soap to 4 cups water
  • Disinfectant: 1 part rubbing alcohol to 1 part water
  • Glass cleaner: 1 part vinegar to 1 part water
  • Tub & tile cleaner: 1 part vinegar to 1 part dish soap
  • Degreaser: 1 part vegetable oil to 2 parts baking soda

10. How do you keep your caddy stocked?

With everything in one bucket, you won’t have to search for the scrubby sponge or buy duplicate supplies. When you run out of a particular supply you will know it and will be able to restock in a flash during your next shopping trip. Once the job is completed, make sure to put it back in the cabinet under the sink and you’ll be ready to go again. A seasonal deep clean gets easier too; here is how to spring clean with ease all year long.

With these simple strategies, you’ll spend less time searching and more time enjoying a clean, organized home!

Frequently asked questions

What should be in a cleaning caddy?

+

A well-stocked cleaning caddy holds a multi-surface cleaner, microfiber cloths and sponges, rubber gloves, and the specialty cleaners that room needs, such as toilet bowl cleaner, shower spray or oven cleaner. With all of it in one bucket, you grab it, clean, and tuck it under the sink or in a closet for next time.

Should I keep cleaning supplies in every bathroom?

+

Yes, if you can. Kathi Burns recommends a fully stocked cleaning bucket in every major area, including the kitchen, each bathroom and the laundry room. You stop running around the house gathering supplies, and a toilet brush kept beside each toilet means a quick scrub is always ready when you have a spare moment.

How do I store cleaning supplies in a small space?

+

Hang spray bottles, brushes and gloves on hooks or in an over-the-door shoe organizer to free up shelf space. Clear bins or open-top organizers with labels let you spot what you need at a glance. Store tools where you use them, such as a mop in a utility closet and a duster in the living room.

How can I clean my house faster?

+

Declutter before you clean, because clearing countertops and surfaces first leaves fewer obstacles. Then set a timer for focused 10 or 15 minute bursts to stay motivated. The National Soap and Detergent Association has said that getting rid of clutter would eliminate 40 percent of the housework in the average home.

What are easy homemade cleaning recipes?

+

Simple DIY recipes include an all purpose cleaner of one teaspoon dish soap to four cups water, a disinfectant of equal parts rubbing alcohol and water, and a glass cleaner of equal parts vinegar and water. Equal parts vinegar and dish soap clean tub and tile, and vegetable oil with baking soda makes a degreaser.

How do I avoid buying duplicate cleaning supplies?

+

Keep every cleaning tool for a room together in one bucket. When everything lives in one place, you never have to search for the scrubby sponge or buy a second one because you could not find the first. You also see right away when a supply runs out, so you can restock on your next shopping trip.
