TL;DR

Jennifer Urezzio, founder of Soul Language, says no one is here just to be a coach, an author or an entrepreneur; those are delivery systems for something more profound, first for yourself and then for others.

She checks every task, workshop, product, service and client against her purpose, and if it doesn't align, she doesn't do it.

When a client was about to blame her for a problem, Jennifer asked herself what she would do if she knew she was enough, refunded the client within 20 minutes, and says two new clients arrived within about 24 hours.

She chooses clients by asking which Peanuts character a person is energetically: she works with Sallys and Linuses, not Woodstocks, Charlie Browns or Lucys.

Soul Language, which Jennifer has taught since 2008, describes 107 core energies of the soul across three categories: mission, how you feel that mission, and soulful personality.

What is this episode about?

Kathi Burns, CPO®, Business FLOW Strategist, talks with Jennifer Urezzio, founder of Soul Language, about how to attract aligned clients by getting clear on your purpose first. Jennifer went to art school, then spent years in marketing and PR, where the media loved her because she told them the truth. A chance meeting at a conference, and a question about why she clicked with one woman and not another, led her to Soul Language, which she has taught since 2008. You'll hear why she calls being a coach or an entrepreneur a delivery system, what to ask yourself when you're in conflict with your own business, how the question "if I knew I was enough, what would I do?" led her to refund a client in 20 minutes, how she sorts clients by Peanuts characters, and how she gets unstuck.

You have to start off with wholeness and completeness, or your business is going to keep imploding.Jennifer Urezzio

What is Soul Language?

Soul Language is Jennifer Urezzio's paradigm for putting tangibility to the soul, built on what she calls core energies of soul, or languages. It began when she clicked with one woman at a conference and not another, and kept asking why. Later she found that she and that woman shared one of the same core energies.

Listen from 0:36

How do you know when you've found your calling?

Jennifer says it was the moment she accepted her mission. Before that she was already using her intuition as the answer girl in marketing, but marketing was a sucky delivery system for her. Once she accepted the mission, the delivery system appeared. She says so often we follow a path because it's what we know, which is why inner listening matters.

Listen from 3:14

What does it mean that your business is a delivery system?

It means being a coach, author or entrepreneur is only the way you deliver something more profound, first for yourself and then for others. Jennifer says her purpose is to create freedom. She checks every task, workshop, product, service and client against that purpose, and if it doesn't align, she lets it go.

Listen from 5:07

What should you do when you're in conflict with your own business?

Ask what you want that you're not getting, then start giving it to yourself. Jennifer says it's never about the money or the next client; for her it's usually freedom, and when she feels she is over-servicing, she gets cranky and puts that into the business. She calls it a fine line between service and servitude, and says your purpose starts with you, not with the people you serve.

What would you do if you knew you were enough?

That is the question Jennifer asks clients, and herself, to get back into alignment: what would you do, be, express and say? When a client was about to blame her for a problem, she asked it, told the client they weren't a right fit, and returned her money within 20 minutes. She says she felt such freedom, and two new clients came in within about 24 hours.

Listen from 12:49

How do you attract aligned clients?

Jennifer attracts aligned clients by choosing them on purpose: she asks her soul which Peanuts character a person is energetically. Her people are Sallys and Linuses. She doesn't work with Woodstocks, Charlie Browns or Lucys, because Lucy will always pull the football. She says this keeps her from making decisions based on lack or fear.

How do you get unstuck in your business?

Jennifer takes time off and does something completely different, even if it's just a walk or taking the dog to the park. Once she asked her best friend, who owned the PR company she used to work for, if she could come work for her, and by Thursday she remembered why she'd left. She also keeps support teams that hold the solution for her, and asks for help when she's caught in shame.

Is your business a hobby or a movement?

Jennifer asks herself that question all the time. It started when her best friend asked how much time she was spending on her business and told her she had a hobby. Now she asks whether she's treating her work like a hundred-year movement, and if so, what someone building a legacy would do.

Kathi: Hi everyone, I am here with Jennifer Urezzio. She's the founder of Soul Language, which is a paradigm that puts tangibility to soul, so there's a conscious connection that enables crystal clear connections. Jennifer has trained over 30 of the 5,000 worldwide Soul Language practitioners, and I'm excited to talk about Soul Language. I love all this stuff, and I really want to hear what Jennifer has to say. So welcome, Jennifer. Thank you for being on the Organized and Energized podcast.

Jennifer: Thank you so much. I'm excited to be here.

Kathi: Yeah, very much so. So how did you get started in Soul Language? What was the background of all that?

Jennifer: I was in marketing and PR, and I was really good at my job. I wasn't allowed to talk to clients, but the media loved me because I would tell them the truth. And I was like, there must be something. I can feel it. There's something bigger inside of me. How do I access it? And, as the divine does, it put mentors in my path, and I started to jump on those mentoring stones. I was speaking at a conference, and this woman sat down next to me and went, we're going to be friends. I was like, totally. Then my inside voice went, why her and not this other woman across the way? I don't care if I ever see that person again. What is that? What I heard through divine guidance was, oh, that's Soul Language. And I was like, okay. Before long I had this paradigm, because I kept asking questions about how to put tangibility to soul, and to the soul of a business. Then I went back to that woman, and I was like, listen, I'm doing this crazy thing called Soul Language. I'd love to identify your Soul Languages. And we spoke the same language. One of our core energies of soul, which I call languages, was the same. So of course I got her and she got me, instantly. She really came from a direct soulful place. So that's the short story about how I got here. It was a bumpy road at times.

Kathi: So the other lady, the one you didn't really want to talk to, she was speaking a different Soul Language?

Jennifer: I would venture to guess, yeah. Or a language that I don't really have an affiliation with. We collect energy, right? If we were to identify five of your clients, ten to one, they have a common theme. They have a common energy. And so I would go, oh, look, you're a mentor, and in theory you collect mentors. So yeah, our energy just didn't resonate with her, and I tend to collect the same kind of people, in the best way.

If we were to identify five of your clients, ten to one, they have a common theme. They have a common energy.

Kathi: I think that's true for all entrepreneurs. Even as simple as the avatar. People say, well, who's your avatar? And I tell my clients that are starting to launch, your avatar is you. You are who you're going to resonate with: people that are like you. Why try to make some other avatar that's not even like you be your audience? And it comes back to the soul resonance, which I hadn't really considered. So that's like an aha moment for me. I really appreciate you saying that. So when did you realize that this was your calling? As a backtrack, sorry, I'm going to say this is something I knew for 40 years, that I wasn't doing what I should be doing with my career. How long was it that you knew, when you were in marketing, that it wasn't quite right? And when did you decide that that was your shift?

Jennifer: I think it was up until the moment that it wasn't. Meaning, I was the answer girl in marketing. I was using my intuition in marketing. What was missing was a deeper way of being of service, but I was being my mission in marketing. It was a sucky delivery system. So there were parts of me that weren't fully accepting my mission. The moment I accepted the mission, the delivery system appeared, and I think that happened like the chicken and the egg. And once I had this delivery system, I was like, oh yeah, duh, this is so easy. And now my clients go, I heard you in my head. Of course, because we're resonating with each other. All of my life, I knew that there was something bigger. I just didn't have what that bigger was. I went to art school, and I thought, oh, I want to be highly creative. Well, I'm highly creative now. It's not what I knew, right? So I think so often we are following a path because it's what we know, in the limited scope of knowing. We don't have the context of going, oh, there's something bigger here. And that's why it's so important that you pursue that inner listening, that internal landscape, because that will lead you to the delivery system that resonates with you, mind, body and spirit.

Kathi: So you say delivery system. Can you explain a little bit what that means?

Jennifer: Yeah. No one's here to be an entrepreneur, a coach, an author, a writer. No, those are all delivery systems, right? You are here to do something extremely profound, first for yourself and then for others. When you accept that, then the delivery system becomes easy. I would be doing what I'd be doing as a bartender. Sucky delivery system for me, but I would be doing it. It's when you really understand, I am profoundly here to create freedom, first for myself, and help others create freedom for them. Okay, done. Great delivery system shows up. And I also base what I do, or what action I take in my business, on that purpose. One of the things I always ask is: is this task, is this action, is this workshop, is this product, is this service going to align with that purpose? If it doesn't, I don't do it. If that person doesn't align with that purpose, I can let it go. And I think so often people keep chasing a carrot. They keep chasing it so they can feel whole and complete. You have to start off with wholeness and completeness, or your business is going to keep imploding.

You have to start off with wholeness and completeness, or your business is going to keep imploding.

Kathi: Yep. Hallelujah on that. So you went to the conference, and you figured out that you got some mentors. And I think that's what happens too: whenever you're on purpose, the mentors show up for you. So you had your mentors. How did it feel when you landed your first client?

Jennifer: I was speaking about essential oils and life purpose. When I got off that platform, people were lined up to talk to me. They're like, can you tell me about this? Can you tell me? I'm like, yeah, I totally can. I don't know how I can or how I know it, but I totally can. I did a bunch of readings there, and I went home having paid for the entire conference, from start to finish, and had clients that were going to pay me monthly. And here's the thing. I want to be very clear with everyone, because there's a lot of mumbo jumbo about living your purpose, and I think people beat themselves up over it. You're being your purpose every day. You can be your purpose sitting on your couch. It's a deeper sense of acceptance and a deeper sense of taking action on that purpose. And you're still valuable, and you still can claim your value, if you're not being your purpose. But because I was so aligned with my voice and vision, people were like, how do I do that? How do I be that? And I was like, oh, right. So it felt weird and great, and like, duh, and, oh, I've been here forever. I remember the first placement, because I was in PR. When I got a client in Better Homes and Gardens, a new client's first big placement, 5 million readers, I used to do a placement dance every time I got a placement. And then after 17 years, I was like, whatever. I think it's important to keep that energy, not from a place of attachment, but from a place of celebration and joy. I think so many people are in conflict with their business, and that's just going to create conflict in every part of your being and doing that business.

Kathi: So I think what you're saying is, if you're in conflict with your business, it's going to self-perpetuate. What's the first step if you're feeling like, my boss is mean, and you're your own boss? What would you say to them?

Jennifer: I would say connect to your soul via your heart, or your Soul Languages if you know them, and ask: what do you want that you're not getting, and how can we start giving that to you? Because it's not money. It's something bigger than that. It's never about the money. It's never about getting a client. It's always something bigger. For me, it's always, I don't feel free. I love freedom. And when I don't feel like I'm free, when I feel like I'm over-servicing, then I'm going to put that into my business and be cranky. And I serve people all day long. I'm a master of service. So it's a very fine line between service and servitude. It's a constant reflection and checking in. So if you're in conflict with your business, what are you not getting? And then how can we start giving that to you? How can you start filling yourself up?

It's a very fine line between service and servitude.

Kathi: It's funny. A while back I was having a discussion with someone, saying you shouldn't say that you're in service to your clients. You're not really in service to your clients. If you're in alignment, you're in service to your soul purpose, so you shouldn't get burnt out. You don't want to serve others; you want to serve yourself. Because if you're serving yourself, then things are all coming together, and you're saying what you should be saying, when you should be saying it, how you should be saying it, to the people that are there to listen.

Jennifer: Yeah, it always starts at home: first for you, and then for others. When I would ask people, so what do you think your purpose is, they're like, my purpose is to serve women. And you could hear my eyes roll. I remember saying to a person, well, no, that's not it. And she's like, what do you mean? I was like, oh my God, you are not here to be a purpose to anyone else but yourself first. It's from the overflow. If you keep living your life for them, you're going to be really cranky, and you're always going to feel like you're not getting what you want. Because you're not, because you're coming from a place of separation and not wholeness and completeness. And I'm a content-driven person, so I have tons of content to help people realize they're whole and complete, anything from rewriting their marketing story to how they actually create. Because I have warrior energy, I could have an idea in the morning and spit it out by the afternoon, and it wasn't going anywhere. And now I'm like, oh, there's no incubation, there's no nurturing. I just set those little babies free. So I created a whole system about how to nurture and how to understand your creative process, because I do not like to suffer, and I don't want anyone else to suffer. So whenever I was feeling separate, I would create a tool, and now I have hundreds and hundreds of groovy tools.

Jennifer Urezzio
Jennifer Urezzio, founder of Soul Language.

Kathi: Nice. Well, that leads me to this: if you're feeling a little bit amiss, what's your favorite hack? What's your favorite tool to get yourself back into alignment and back on track with your business?

Jennifer: I always like to tell clients: if you knew you were enough, what would you do? What would you be? What would you express? What would you say? Do, be, express, say. Here's why that question is so important. This happened about last year. I had this client on the phone, and she was a Lucy, and I'll explain what that means in a minute. She was getting ready to blame me for her problem. And I went, if I knew I was enough, what would I do? What would I say? What would I be here? And I went, listen, I don't think we're right for each other. I'm going to return your money. And she's like, what? I was like, nope, I'm going to return your money. You can have the sessions that we already did for free, but we're not a right fit. And within 20 minutes I had returned her money. Ten, 15 years ago, I wouldn't have done that. And there was such freedom. And by the way, two new clients came in within like 24 hours, to pay double that. I think so often people are doing and saying and being from a place of separation, not wholeness and completeness, not enoughness, and then that creates more disharmony in your business.

If you knew you were enough, what would you do? What would you be? What would you express? What would you say?

Jennifer: So another hack I have is how I select my clients. I base my client selection on Peanuts characters. I tune in, and I ask my soul, which Peanuts character is this person energetically? My people are Sallys and Linuses. I don't work with Woodstocks; they're crazy. I don't work with Charlie Browns; they're victim energy, and that doesn't work well with warrior energy. And I used to work with Lucys. Lucy will always pull the football, right? And it took me a while to go, I'm done with Lucys. I don't want to work with Lucys anymore. I'm not going to be fooled by the Lucy. And so recently I had a prospective client, and it was even a referral, and even before they got on the phone with me, I was like, ah, they're Lucys. I know they're Lucys. And I'm like, be present. I'm just going to be me, but it's not going to be aligned, because they're Lucy, and I don't want to work with Lucy. So you need all of these hacks, in a conscious way, so you're not spinning your wheels and spinning your wheels, getting gaslighted, which a lot of people do, and making decisions based on lack, based on fear. It wastes so much time, and you just feel disheartened and disappointed. It's a drain on your energy.

Kathi: I think as brand-new entrepreneurs, people are like, I just got to take it, because that client is actually going to give me money. But just like in your situation, you got rid of a Lucy, you added space, and two new people just came right in the door.

Jennifer: Exactly.

Kathi: So add space to your life and get rid of the Lucys. I like the Linuses. I love the artistic creatives. That's my jam. Linus is it for me. Okay, so tell me about a time when you were stuck in your business, and you felt like you needed to get your mojo back. What did you do, besides ditching the Lucy? How long have you been doing this?

Jennifer: I've been doing it since 2008.

Kathi: Okay, so I'm sure there have been a few ups and downs. How do you get yourself re-energized whenever you're feeling a little bit burnt?

Jennifer: I take time off. I take time off, and I do something completely, totally different. One year, and this was a long time ago, I went to my best friend, who used to own the company I worked for, and asked, do you have any time that I could come work for you? And she's like, what? Of course. I always need help. I was like, I just need to do something different, just for a week or something. I just need to remember why I'm doing what I'm doing. So I spent a year booking media for her, and by Thursday I was like, oh my God, now I remember. I'm good. I was like, oh my God, I hate these people. What am I doing? But I just go and do something different, even if it's just going for a walk or taking the dog to the park. I think that's really important. I think also that you always need support teams that are going to be in the consciousness of the solution for you. Sorry, my watch is going off. Because if you don't have someone holding the consciousness of the solution when you're on the ground, it's really going to be hard to lift yourself up. And the last thing: you also want to make sure that you're not in the consciousness of shame. If you're in the consciousness of shame, you really do need somebody to support you, to move you to a next level. There's not enough life force in that area for you to move yourself up. You're literally drowning. Well, no, figuratively drowning in your own shame. So you actually need to check in and ask for help. So those are a couple of things I continue to do. It's not a one-off.

Kathi: I love going back to your old career and then saying, yeah, no, that's not why I was doing that. I get it. So you were going to do it a year, and you did it a week.

Jennifer: I was just going to take some time off for a couple of days, and luckily she really did need somebody. Somebody had dropped off, so it was perfect timing. And I didn't use my name. I used an alias, because I was like, I'm not going to go back to the old way. I just want to shake things up. So anyone who wants to shake things up can come work for me for a week. I'm offering it. Have those places where you can just shake yourself free, because that's what it is. You're in the loop, and you need to step out of the loop.

Kathi: I get that so much. I'm a change agent; that's what I do for clients. My goal is to do one new thing at least once a week, but generally, about every other day, I do something that I've never done or been. Always having something new, I think, is a really good thing to keep yourself motivated. I love, though, jumping back into a career. That's hilarious. So what's the best piece of advice that someone has given you for your business, that you really took to heart and said, I'll remember that one forever?

Jennifer: It goes back to my best friend. I was complaining, and she's like, well, let's talk about it. She goes, okay, so how much time do you spend on your business? Blah, blah, blah. So you have a hobby. And I went, oh, shoot. And I constantly look at it. I'm not talking about being glued to your desk 24/7. But I constantly go, okay, is this a business? Well, I really call it a movement now. Is this a hundred-year movement, or am I treating this like a hobby? And that always allows me to go, oh, well, if I'm treating it like a movement, here are the things that you do for legacy. If I'm treating it like a hobby, these are the energies, the consciousness and the things you would do to treat it like a hobby. So that, I think, is one of the best pieces of advice that I have ever… she's given me some great advice, but that's one of her good ones.

Is this a hundred-year movement, or am I treating this like a hobby?

Kathi: Yeah, that's really good. I love that. So, hobby or legacy, right? Good. Okay, so as we're winding down, I know you have a valuable free resource that you will offer the listeners. What is it that they can download, using the link below?

Jennifer: I think that one of the things that's really important is creating a sacred practice. I'm a renegade, so I don't like to do it the same way. I can be really kind of cranky, and it has to be integrated in your life. And for warrior energy, it's not sitting and meditating. No, that's never going to work. So I created a tool where you can create a sacred practice, however you define sacred practice, that will integrate with your life. And the reason why you want to do that is because when challenges come up, that's not the time to be in deep conversation with yourself and whatever you call your higher power. It's before that, so you have a stable, strong foundation. So that's my free tool.

Kathi: Oh, good. So it's to help you determine what your sacred practice would be, based on you.

Jennifer: Yes, exactly. It's not one-size-fits-all. You're actually creating it based on what a sacred practice is, how it can be integrated in your life, and what would make you happy.

Kathi: Awesome. Now, you keep saying your warrior energy. What are the different types of energies?

Jennifer: There are 107 core energies of soul, across three different categories: your mission, how you feel that mission, and then your soulful personality. My soulful personality energy is called graceful warrior: action, movement, courage and grace. And there are other Soul Languages that have warrior energy as well. Warrior energy has a very distinctive style, and they have distinctive limiting beliefs, like we're the lone wolf. And so when you have warrior energy, you have to understand how to use it consciously rather than unconsciously. That's taken quite a bit of time, because I used to make war with everything, and knowing my Soul Languages, especially around that, has been extremely helpful.

Kathi: Nice. That's brilliant. So what's the one thing that I should have asked you? What should we be talking about, Jennifer, that I haven't really touched upon?

Jennifer: That people are called into their business to do something bigger, first for themselves and then for others, and that your business is naturally designed to be successful. It's pure consciousness. It is not you, and you should stop treating your business like it's you.

Kathi: Stop treating your business like it's you. Good.

Jennifer: It's designed to succeed. So when we put success into that, it will naturally expand.

Kathi: Cool. Awesome. I'm so happy you joined me on the show. This is possibly a completely new spin for those of you who have not been familiar with the soul talk. I hope it's helped you a lot. I know that no matter what happens, we always have insight, and we always hear what we need to hear when we need to hear it. So hopefully this has resonated with you out there, and I very much appreciate your time being on the show. Thank you.

Jennifer: Thank you so much.

Kathi: Download the gift, and we will see you the next time around. Thanks.

Inspired? Here Are Your Action Steps:

  • Look at five of your clients and write down the theme and energy they have in common.
  • Write down what you are here to do, first for yourself and then for others, apart from your job title.
  • Check each task, product, workshop and client against that purpose, and drop what doesn't align.
  • When you feel in conflict with your business, ask what you want that you're not getting, and start giving it to yourself.
  • Before a hard conversation, ask: if I knew I was enough, what would I do, be, express and say?
  • Let go of a client who doesn't fit, even if it means returning their money.
  • When you're stuck, take time off and do something completely different, even a walk.
  • Ask yourself whether you're treating your business like a hobby or a hundred-year movement.
  • Create a sacred practice that fits your life before the next challenge comes up.

+

In this episode, Jennifer Urezzio's answer is to get clear on your purpose and choose clients who resonate with it. She says we collect energy, so your clients tend to share a common theme. Kathi adds that your avatar is you, because you'll resonate with people who are like you.

What does Jennifer mean by a delivery system?

+

In her view, nobody is here just to be a coach, an author or an entrepreneur. Those are ways of delivering something more profound, first for yourself and then for others. Once you accept what that is, she says, the right delivery system shows up, and you can check every task, product and client against it.

What should you do if you're in conflict with your own business?

+

Ask what you want that you aren't getting, then start giving it to yourself. For Jennifer it's usually freedom. She says there's a fine line between service and servitude, and you have to start from feeling whole and complete rather than chasing that feeling.

How does she use Peanuts characters to choose clients?

+

She asks which character a person is energetically. Her people are Sallys and Linuses. She no longer works with Woodstocks, Charlie Browns or Lucys, because Lucy will always pull the football.

What is a sacred practice?

+

Jennifer describes it as a practice you define for yourself that fits into your life, not one-size-fits-all. As someone with warrior energy, sitting and meditating doesn't work for her. She says you build it before challenges come up, so you have a stable, strong foundation when they do.

About Jennifer Urezzio

Jennifer Urezzio is the founder of Soul Language, a paradigm that puts tangibility to soul. She went to art school, then spent years in marketing and PR, where she was known for telling the media the truth and kept sensing there was something bigger inside her. She began asking how to put tangibility to soul and to the soul of a business, and the answer became Soul Language, which she describes as 107 core energies of the soul across three categories: your mission, how you feel that mission, and your soulful personality. She has been doing this work since 2008 and has trained over 30 of the 5,000 Soul Language practitioners worldwide.
