TL;DR

Colin Sprake says success is not determined by the events in your life but by how you perceive them.

At 14, in South Africa, he bought John Kehoe's book Mind Power at a book tour event; decades later he found Kehoe living just up the road from him in Canada.

A mentor told Colin that purpose feels like a cable attached to your chest pulling you forward, and Colin's favourite word is fulfillment because happiness is its by-product.

His best relationship advice is that a relationship that is difficult at the start doesn't get easier, whether it's a business partnership, a hire or a marriage.

The one word Colin wishes he had learned sooner is trust, because he says you can't trust others until you trust yourself.

What is this episode about?

Kathi Burns, CPO®, Business FLOW Strategist, talks with Colin Sprake, a business growth mentor and speaker who combines human psychology and physiology to help people get the results they want. Colin explains how to shift your inner vibration in his terms: change your thoughts, your words and the stories you tell yourself, and take responsibility for where you are instead of blaming anyone. He shares how a book bought at 14 in South Africa led him, decades later, to his mentor John Kehoe's door in Canada. You'll hear why he says successful people mentor others, what purpose feels like, why he chose handwriting over an app for his Awaken Your Brilliance system, why a relationship that starts hard doesn't get easier, how to check a company before you hire it, and why trust is the one word he wishes he had learned sooner.

Success is not determined by events that happen in your life. Success is determined by how you perceive those events.Colin Sprake

What determines whether someone is successful?

Colin Sprake says success is determined by how you perceive the events in your life, not by the events themselves. He says anyone can be successful. Your life is full of stories that either serve you or hinder you, and many people live in stories that will never get them where they want to go.

Listen from 0:23

How did Colin Sprake meet his mentor John Kehoe?

He met him at 14, at an event on Kehoe's book tour in South Africa, and bought his book Mind Power. Colin has practised Mind Power for about 35 years. Years after moving to Canada, he looked Kehoe up, found he lived just up the road, and brought the book he had bought as a teenager. Kehoe later invited him to his 50th anniversary of speaking, and the two have shared stages.

Listen from 4:03

Why do successful people mentor others?

Colin says really successful people mentor others, and they do it genuinely. He questions the success of people who won't help others. Kathi agrees that the most successful people are the ones you can reach out to, and Colin adds that success is about how many people you lift up on the way, not about walking on people.

Listen from 6:17

What does it feel like to find your purpose?

A mentor told Colin that purpose is waking up feeling as if a cable is attached to your chest, pulling you forward so you can't stop yourself. Colin says you don't find happiness, passion or purpose outside yourself because they are already inside you. His favourite word is fulfillment, because he sees happiness as the by-product of feeling fulfilled.

Listen from 8:59

How do you shift your inner vibration?

Colin says you shift your inner vibration by changing your thoughts, what you say and the stories you tell yourself, because those shape your outer world results. He says we no longer need to blame anyone for where we're at; we need to take responsibility, own who we are and own our vibration. His Awaken Your Brilliance system puts this into a daily morning and evening routine.

Why write things by hand instead of using an app?

Colin wants people away from technology, so his system works anywhere, with no Wi-Fi needed. He says 20 to 22 percent of what the brain learns is tactile, and that many people have lost a process in the brain over the last 10 to 20 years, which is why the system is handwritten. Kathi, a tactile learner, says writing something down helps her remember it, and she can't learn a computer task by watching someone else do it.

Do difficult relationships get easier over time?

No: the best advice Colin ever got was that if a relationship is difficult to start, it doesn't get easier. He applies it to business partnerships, hires and marriages. Kathi says the right relationships feel like water over a rock, and shares how a mentor chose a business partner who had been happily married for 30 years.

How do you know if a marketing agency is any good?

Ask the agency what it spends on its own ads, and if it says it doesn't advertise, Colin says to run. For an SEO company, look together at where its own website ranks on Google. He says to hire people who have done it themselves, which is why he prefers mentorship to coaching. Kathi adds that your gut should feel good about the person too.

Kathi: Hi, everyone. I'm here today to speak with Colin Sprake. He's an expert at human psychology and human physiology, and he combines both of them to create outrageous results for his clients. Today we're going to talk about how to shift your inner vibration to achieve the outer world results you want. I'm excited about this one. Welcome, Colin. It's good to see you.

Colin: Great to be here, Kathi, and great to support you and your audience as well.

Kathi: Absolutely. So talk to me about your backstory. What have you done prior to this new career?

Colin: My career thoughts are new right now, but I can tell you one thing. For me it's super interesting: if you looked at me and my past, many people would have thought I would never be successful in any way or form, because of PTSD and bullying and some real tragic stuff that happened to me as a child and as a young teenager. And Kathi, for me one of the most life-altering things, and it will probably shock your audience: at the age of 14, I attempted suicide twice. People said to me, wow, what happened? I said it really doesn't matter what happened. But from there I got to meet a mentor that is actually from Canada. I was living in South Africa at the time and never thought I'd end up in Canada. Now I live down the street from him, which is even crazier. And that changed my life. It put me on a trajectory that got me to understand that anybody can be successful. Success is not determined by events that happen in your life. Success is determined by how you perceive those events. A lot of people's perception is sometimes delusional around where they're at and what's happening, and my goal is to bring some clarity to people, to really understand that no matter what your situation, you can be successful, you can be financially abundant. And at the same time you start to really realize that your life is full of stories that are either serving you or hindering you. And the saddest part is so many people live in stories that will never get them to where they want to be.

Success is not determined by events that happen in your life. Success is determined by how you perceive those events.

Kathi: Absolutely. Fourteen years old is a really weird time for us as humans. I think it's a really tough time. I remember that I had experiences similar when I was that age. And I so agree that we grow from all the stuff that happens to us, and we grow by letting go of the stuff that really doesn't serve us. Just like you said, you can choose to write the story around it, or you can move on and create a new story for yourself. Sounds like that's exactly what you did. I think that's fantastic that you live right down the street from your mentor. So talk to me about that. What happened, and how did you find this person? Probably just came into your life right when you needed it.

Colin: Yeah. Well, if I'd only realized how divinely guided everything is at that age, it would have been a lot easier. But it was, for me, Kathi, really interesting. I started searching. I was like, if I don't get help, I might not make 15, or might make 16 years old or whatever. So I started to search, and it was very interesting. When I say divinely guided: I got to meet this gentleman. He was on a book tour to South Africa when we had all the restrictions of having nobody foreign in the country, and I don't know how he got in, with all the major restrictions and different things we had in the 70s, 80s and 90s. He got in, I went to his event, and I sat there. His name is John Kehoe, incredible human being, and I bought his book called Mind Power. And I realized that was the start of my journey to where I am today. I've been doing Mind Power now for, oh my God, it must be 35 years. And I've got to a place where I've got it so well honed that I realized, for me, Kathi, the journey is 100 percent about what happens between your ears. It's for everything you do, whether it's business or career or whatever. It's the stuff that happens in your head that either drives you forward, or you fall back on, or you die on. And a lot of people don't get that.

Colin: For me it was the start of my journey with John Kehoe, who came to Canada 25 years ago. After being here for a few years, he always was in my heart, because I always remembered him. Then I started being on the speaking circuit and helping train people, and just caring that people get ahead, and I looked him up and realized he was just up the road from me. I reached out to him. I took the book with me that I got when I was 14 years old, and I said, isn't this picture very different? The picture in the book versus the person today, because that picture's like 30 years ago. And of course he was quite a bit older than me, probably 15 or 20 years older than me. It was super interesting just to get to meet him. At that stage I had become an author as well, so we could really share some really great stories. He's been on stage with me now at different events. I went to one of his most special events, when he had been speaking for, I think it was 50 years. He invited me to his 50th anniversary, and he said, Colin, I have to have you there, because you are one of the most impactful stories I've ever had: where you were, what happened, to where you are today. And now we're both working together.

Colin: So really cool story, Kathi, in terms of he's a great human being. And I think that's a key nugget for all people: really successful people mentor others, and they do it genuinely. There's lots of people that are successful that don't really want to mentor other people, and then I really question their level of success, in terms of who they are and how they do things.

Kathi: I totally agree with that. In fact, I was just speaking about that with a colleague: the most successful people are the ones that you are able to reach out to, and they're receptive. It's the ones that have the coat of success that you're less able to reach out to. They're less open and receptive to helping, because I think that we become super successful by offering our help to people who need it, just like your mentor did for you. And what a thrill for him, I'm sure, when you showed up on his doorstep with the old tattered book saying, I need your autograph, because this is how you've touched me. That's fantastic. What a really good story.

Colin: Yeah, super good. And I think that's part of what kindness is all about. Success doesn't mean you have to get there by taking advantage of people, or walking on people, or doing anything that's negative around that. Success is around how many people you lift up on the way.

Success is around how many people you lift up on the way.

Kathi: Absolutely. That's what it's all about. So talk to me about your life's work now. How are you helping people? Tell me some stories.

Colin: I've been on a journey. I won't get into the whole of what's happened in the last two and a half years, but the last two and a half years have been an absolute blessing for me, in the sense that it gave me food for thought, and it really got me super clear. I'm not on a search. Everyone's like, I want to find happiness, whatever. I don't believe you ever find happiness. I don't believe you find abundance, and I don't believe you find your passion or your purpose. And people are like, what do you mean you don't believe that you find those? Because none of those are external to you. They're all inside of us. Our happiness, our passion, our purpose, everything's inside of us. We're so busy looking out and hunting for this thing that we want to find. You don't find anything.

Colin: One of the key pieces for me, and I'll share this with you: one of my mentors said to me, Colin, what's your purpose? And I said to him, I don't know. He said, well, I'm going to go to another meeting. I was in his office, and he was going to step out quickly to go and see somebody down the passageway. It's going to be about 10 minutes, I'll be back, and I want your answer to purpose. He came back and I gave him my answer, and he was like, you see, everyone's hunting for something they'll never find. He said, purpose is when you wake up in the morning and you feel like there's a cable attached to your chest, just pulling you forward, that you cannot stop yourself. That's purpose. It's like, how do I get out of bed with a bounce in my step? You cannot stop yourself. So my favorite word is not happiness. My favorite word is fulfillment, because I think when we're fulfilled, the byproduct of fulfillment is happiness, which is such a big thing for me.

Purpose is when you wake up in the morning and you feel like there's a cable attached to your chest, just pulling you forward.

Colin: So my life journey now: those last two and a half years have been what I consider some of the saddest parts that I've watched for humanity. How much anger, fear, resentment, anxiety. And I'm like, imagine if we'd taken two and a half years and put it around love, kindness, sincerity, genuineness. Where would this world be? It would be in a very different place. So my life's work now is really about helping people understand how to bring more love into business, how to bring more love to your customers, bring back community, because we've been searching for community for the longest time. You can be sitting on a Zoom call, and it's just crazy. I look at it now and I'm like, where do we go to?

Colin: Funny enough, I'll launch a brand new product tomorrow. The hardest part is I'm launching the product and half my product is already sold, because people know it's been coming for a long time. It's something to help people really understand that we're all designed to have prosperity, we're all designed to be financially abundant, and this product is designed to help people get back to that. Get back to who they're meant to be. Understand that we have a lot of societal and cultural pressures that say we have to be a certain way, and I'm like, it's time to own your humanity as each individual, and not be so influenced by other people. Hold the space for you to understand what you should be doing on this planet.

Colin: We had a statistic that came out today, Kathi, which actually saddens me, where they say now 25 percent of Canadians in the workforce are no longer living paycheck to paycheck. There's not enough paycheck. That's 25 percent of our workforce. That's horrendous. Where's this world going to? So I just love bringing people to understanding that we control our destiny: our thoughts, what we say, the stories we tell ourselves, which all influence our inner vibration, which completely impacts our outer world results. And my goal is to help people realize that we no longer need to blame anyone for where we're at. We need to take responsibility for where we're at, own who we are, own our vibration, and change this world.

The stories we tell ourselves all influence our inner vibration, which completely impacts our outer world results.

Kathi: Yeah, I'm with you on that for sure. I want to talk about your new product that's launching here, but let me back up. You said that you're not here to find your happiness or find your fulfillment or find your purpose. Would you consider that you just need to uncover it and discover it, because it's been there all along?

Colin: So here's an interesting one for me. I think we all have a deep calling inside of us that we don't listen to. This might be too much for some people listening today, but for me, I believe in our soul. Our soul knows what it came here to do. And deep in our soul, you just know, Kathi, when you're fulfilled. You can call it uncovered. It just happens. It absolutely happens, where all of a sudden you wake up one day and you're like, something's pulling me forward and I cannot stop myself. It's because you're now listening to your soul, moving forward in the direction you want to go in.

Colin: I'm not really promoting the product here, but the product itself is so awesome, in the sense that it's a product I've been wanting to develop for years. It's my legacy product. It's a product that will work for millions of people long after I'm gone from this planet. And my goal is to leave this planet with more love in it, more care, more understanding, more respect for each other. And if we can all be more loving towards each other, more loving to what we do, Kathi, oh my God, will this planet be a different place.

Kathi: Yeah. And I think that this has been such a time of turmoil for the whole world. But I always think that before there's a big shift, things have to happen. It has to hit the fan, so to speak. I remember I was in Barbara Marx Hubbard's program a long, long time ago, because the shift's going to happen, the shift's going to happen. And I think that things have to fall apart before they can fall together. There needs to be the space for the new stuff to emerge, like more love, more compassion. We can now feel how much everyone's hurting, so then our love pours out more freely. As a person who's a big proponent of space, when there's extra space available, there's new space for things to birth themselves, be it a genuine, bigger, larger, deeper concern and love and caring throughout the world. So I'm with you on that. So talk to me about the product. Now let's hear it.

Colin Sprake
Colin Sprake, business growth mentor and speaker, on why your inner world shapes your outer results.

Colin: It's super interesting. The product's called the Awaken Your Brilliance Result System. It's been 20 years in development. It's all around physiology and psychology. It's not a journal. It's a two-part system, if you want to call it that. There's two books. The one is really what you need to do on an annual basis, and the other one is what you need to do daily. There's daily processes for the morning and daily processes for the evening. Honestly, you can do it in as little as five minutes in the morning and five minutes in the evening, and who can't find ten minutes in a day to look after themselves? Once you really start to get it, I did, this morning, I think 35 minutes in the morning, and I'll do probably 10 or 15 minutes this evening.

Colin: It follows a system of all the pieces. Kathi, where I look at a lot of information that's out there, it's like these individual threads. You go from one place to another place and you get this thread of information, which is valuable, but nothing really weaves it together into a map that can really support you. So I decided to take all these pieces. God, I searched for years. I've spent hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars on events and seminars and retreats and whatever, which are all awesome, and I got lots from them, but I still felt there were pieces missing. So I said, how do I bring this all together? When I started creating it, it's been tested now for probably over five years, maybe six years. We've been testing and then moving pieces around so that it really starts to work for people. Once you reprogram the brain, all results change. And that's what I've been busy with for, holy moly, it's actually over 20 years now, Kathi.

Colin: But now that product is two pieces, and people are like, is there an app? I'm like, I want people so far away from technology. I want to keep everyone away from that, where you can be in some jungle, you can be anywhere in the world, and you're not like, hey, what's the Wi-Fi, Colin, I couldn't do my Awaken Your Brilliance Result System because there was no Wi-Fi. This is handwritten, because there's a process in our brains that lots of people have lost over the last 10 to 20 years. Maybe it's gone dormant. Remember, muscles atrophy. So handwritten, tangible stuff is really what's important. They say that 20 to 22 percent of what our brain learns is tactile. Little thumbs going up and down like this is not tactile. So we need to feel stuff, touch stuff. I hope to God, whatever happens, we don't get rid of all stores and everything just gets bought online, because there's a tactile piece that is so important to people. Hence the handwriting. We've got a member, part of EBC, that wrote one of the books called The Power of the Other Hand. There's some really cool pieces that people don't understand that have come together in the system, just to help people. I want all people to be prosperous, I want all people to be healthy, and I want all people to be financially abundant. There's no reason for them to be in the situation they're in. And of course then you get our governments to change their mindsets as well.

Kathi: Yeah. And I love the fact that it's a handwritten thing. I just love to write myself, and I know that when I write something down, it solidifies it in my brain and I can remember it easier, because again, I am a tactile learner, big time. Some people aren't that tactile in their learning, but it's interesting that you said 22 percent of our learning comes from tactile learning. That's interesting. Based on what I do as a profession, I really take into consideration how people learn easiest, how each of my clients processes information. I know for me it's tactile for sure. My husband can sit on the computer and he can show me all this stuff to do, but if I'm not doing it, I do not learn it. I cannot watch him and learn how to do it. It's just impossible for me. So that's really good. I'm excited about this product, and I'm sure that we'll have a link below. But meantime, let me ask you a couple more questions. If you had to say that you received a really valuable piece of advice, either about your life or your career or you as a person, who gave you the advice and what did they say to you? What's your most memorable?

Colin: That's a super interesting question. I'm forever learning. I love learning every day and I love implementing. I'm a big fan of that. I always love the statement: knowledge is not power, it's only potential power. It's what you do with it that's powerful. And I think for your listeners, the one thing that has really stood out for me, over being in business and over the time of doing things, is that relationships are an important part of everything. Relationships in business, relationships at the office if you're in a career, relationships at home, marriages, family, whatever it might be. And my favorite piece of advice I ever got was: if the relationship is difficult to start, it doesn't get easier.

If the relationship is difficult to start, it doesn't get easier.

Kathi: Ah, that's really good.

Colin: Yeah, and that's one of my favorite pieces that I now teach to everybody. Someone's like, oh God, I'm busy doing this business partnership, and we're just getting into it and it's not going well. I'm like, it's not going to get any easier.

Kathi: Yeah. Same thing. You're looking for water over rock. You're looking for ease and flow, right? It just brought to mind, whenever you're talking about relationships: one of my mentors chose his business partner because his business partner had been successfully married in a loving relationship with his wife for 30 years. And he said that says something. If you can find someone who's been in a successful relationship for a very long time, they're probably relationship oriented and might make a good business partner. And I thought that was really smart advice and really savvy on his part, because he was only in his really early 20s when he joined in partnership with this gentleman who was much older than him. I thought that was very astute thinking.

Colin: Yeah. And you look at it from that perspective, and look at it from my own perspective. Ten days from now is my 25th wedding anniversary, and it's my first one. I haven't been married before or anything like that. And my relationship was easy from day one. Did it take work? Damn right it took work. But was it easy? It wasn't complicated. I see these people getting into relationships that are so complicated. There's envy, there's jealousy, there's whatever it might be. It's not going to get easier, right? It's going to get much more difficult.

Kathi: Yeah. We're going to hit 30 years next year being married, and 38 together or so. And like you said, it's one of those things where it's just easy from the beginning. No complications, no subterfuge, none of that. And I think that's what we're looking for in relationships. And for those of you out there that are looking for business partners, or looking for assistants or VAs, you want it to be the same thing. You want it to be something that feels organic, that's not complicated, that is just ease and flow, and like I always like to say, water over a rock, for sure.

Colin: And I think there's lots of people out there that, one of my favorite ones, it's sort of hand in glove with these comments you're now making: always hire people and partner with people who are more successful in that area than you've ever been. If you're going to go hire a digital marketing agency, ask them what they spend themselves on ads a year, or whatever it is. If they're like, oh, we don't spend any money on ads because we do it for our clients, I'm like, run like crazy. They haven't done it themselves. Don't spend your money with them. Because it's super interesting for me, Kathi: so many people, what's my word, they don't really do their homework when they hire somebody or they partner with somebody. And it's really important to do your homework. Everybody listening today, do your homework.

Colin: If you are hiring somebody to show you how to do search engine optimization, tell them, let's jump on the website and let's see where you guys rank on Google. If they don't rank anywhere, run like crazy. It saddens me that people hire companies, spend a fortune, and they never get to where they want to get to. So everyone listening, just be very aware: hire people who have done it. And that's why I like the word mentorship over coaching, because most mentors who mentor you in certain things have done it. And that's mentorship in any area: spiritual, business, finance, anything, fitness, health. There's great mentors out there.

Kathi: Yeah, I agree. Make sure that they walk their talk, for sure, and make sure that your gut feels good about it, because I think that our intuition knows a lot more than we know if we get into our brain thinking, well, they're the best at all this and they can do all this. But if your gut is saying, I don't know, I don't even like talking to this person, then again, run away, like you had said, Colin, for sure. So I know today you have something to offer the readers and the listeners and the viewers. What is it, Colin, that you'd like to offer?

Colin: Well, since I've really spoken about Awaken Your Brilliance, I think it will be really good for people to take a look at it. The website will be live, and it's just awakenyourbrilliance.com. It's really this two-part system that honestly will rewire your brain to shift your inner vibration, so that your outer world results completely change. And it could be in any area of your life. So yes, Kathi, we're blessed. We have a lot of trainers and speakers coming to us going, Colin, would this complement my program? I'm like, it complements so many programs, because it keeps people on track. It's a daily system, as opposed to just three days of intense and then nothing afterwards.

Kathi: Yeah, daily practice is the key to making any type of impactful change, for sure. I love the journaling, and it sounds like you will guide people down the road to awakening who they are and how they feel about their life around them and how they feel about what they're doing in life.

Colin: Yeah, it's beautiful. The only online part of it is it comes with little micro videos, three to five minutes, explaining each piece of it. Once you really understand those, you don't have to ever go back to the videos. It becomes a completely physical process, and that's what I love about it so much. It's really shifting people already. Kathi, I brought in a thousand copies, and our website hasn't even gone live yet, and we've sold over half of them.

Kathi: Well, I hope by the time this comes out that you're still going to have a few, or at least you'll be on reorders.

Colin: No, there's really another 2,000 units coming, and our goal this year is to do north of 10,000 units.

Kathi: Hey, well, I wish you much success, and I think you will do that, through the Evolutionary Business Council, which, for those of you who don't know, we're co-members. Colin Sprake's one-word answer to what he wishes he had learned sooner: trust.

Colin: Wow. There's so much I could go into, Kathi. I think we could talk for hours.

Kathi: That's for sure.

Colin: And I think the key piece for me is really wanting to give value to your listeners, readers, viewers, what have you. Someone asked me this question maybe five or six years ago. I was on stage in a panel, and someone said, Colin, what's the one thing you wish you had learned sooner? And it was a very interesting journey for me after I made the comment, because I really thought about it, and I said to them, it's actually not a something. It's just one word, and that one word is trust. And then I went on a very deep journey of realizing that when you maybe don't trust others, it really means you don't trust yourself. And the only way you can really get people to trust you is when you trust you. So those listeners out there who are like, I don't trust my employees, I don't trust my team members, or whatever: until you learn to trust yourself, you will never be able to trust them. And if I'd learned that a lot earlier, I would have built some of the companies to a much bigger size.

Colin: COVID, I think, has really forced people to trust in some ways, because a lot of people are working at home, what have you. So there's been that big shift of, I have to trust. At the same time there's lots of people like, oh man, we open up the office and everyone should go back to the office. Kathi, it's by far the best word that I wish I'd learned. I wish I'd learned it 30 years ago.

Kathi: I totally am with you on that. And it's so funny, when you said trust, I thought, hmm, does this mean trust others or trust yourself? So you segued right into that. And I totally agree that if you don't trust yourself, you can't trust others. And if you accuse people of something, generally it's something that you're accusing yourself of. It's the one finger forward, three fingers back idea. Same thing with trust. Learn how to trust yourself. It goes back to trust your gut, because your intuition is going to be your litmus for whether to move forward, or to back away slowly, or to just ease into things a little bit more clear-minded. Well, thank you so much. This has been a fun talk, and I wish you so much success with your launch. I'm here to support your launch, so we're here for you. And I just appreciate your time and your energy and coming on the podcast right before you're launching. I'm sure you're super duper busy right now.

Colin: All good, Kathi. Thank you so much. And to all the listeners, viewers and readers, thank you for being with us. I trust you got some great value out of today, and I look forward to supporting you in some way or form, and really helping you get to that next level.

Kathi: All right. Thank you, Colin, so much. It's been a pleasure.

Colin: Thank you so much, Kathi.

Inspired? Here Are Your Action Steps:

  • Pick one hard event from your past and write down the story you tell yourself about it.
  • Ask whether that story is serving you or holding you back, and write a new one if it isn't.
  • Offer help to one person who is earlier on the path than you are.
  • Set aside five minutes each morning and evening for a handwritten daily practice.
  • Write your plans and notes by hand instead of typing them on a screen.
  • If a business relationship is hard from the start, decide now whether to keep going instead of waiting for it to get easier.
  • Before hiring a marketing or SEO company, ask what it spends on its own ads and check where it ranks on Google.
  • Choose mentors who have already done what you want to do.
  • Notice where you don't trust your team, and ask where you don't trust yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What decides whether someone succeeds?

+

Colin Sprake says success isn't determined by the events in your life but by how you perceive them. Your life is full of stories that either serve you or hold you back, and many people live inside stories that will never get them where they want to go.

What does purpose feel like?

+

A mentor told Colin that purpose is waking up feeling as if a cable is attached to your chest, pulling you forward so you can't stop yourself. Colin's favourite word isn't happiness but fulfillment, because he sees happiness as the by-product of feeling fulfilled.

Why does Colin Sprake insist on handwriting instead of an app?

+

He wants people away from screens, and he says a large share of what the brain learns is tactile. Kathi agrees: writing something down helps her remember it, and she can't learn a task by watching someone else do it on a computer.

What's the best relationship advice Colin Sprake ever got?

+

If a relationship is difficult at the start, it doesn't get easier. Colin applies that to business partnerships, hires and marriages alike. Kathi adds that the right relationships feel like water over a rock.

How should you choose who to hire or learn from?

+

Colin says to hire people who are more successful in that area than you. Ask an ad agency what it spends on its own ads, and check where an SEO company ranks on Google. He prefers mentorship to coaching, because a mentor has done the thing themselves.
